This Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe (correctly a Shelby Daytona Coupe) model is of chassis #CSX2299 and was driven into 4th place at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans by Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant. Carroll Shelby designed the car to take on the racing dominance of Ferrari in the mid-60s, specifically the 250 GTO, and this was the second Coupe to be built and the first to be built in Europe at Carrozzeria Gransport in Italy. As well as 4th place overall, Gurney and Bondurant, took 1st place in the GT III Class, having achieved over 315 km/h (196 miles per hour) on the Mulsanne Straight.
​This 1:43-scale model is based on a Modelart111 kit, but I have used my own scratch-built parts to create a fully-opening, super-detailed model. The new chassis-frame, suspension and interior are all scratch-built, and the exterior bodywork has been completely transformed using my own scratch-built parts in resin, soldered brass tube and brass sheet.
The model has fully opening and closing doors, and front and rear covers. Other scratch-built parts include the windscreen, roll bar, exhausts, fuel and oil flaps, dashboard and interior instruments, and headlight surrounds in turned aluminium. The engine is also scratch-built, with the addition of various fuel lines and cables such as the spark plug wires, and there are scratch-built tyre valves in turned aluminium
The photographs shows the development of the model from the very early work in 2023 up until completion in late 2024. The model will be on display at Retromobile 2025.
