1:43-Scale, Super-detailed, Hand-built Model of the Lotus Ford 79, Winner of the 1978 French Grand Prix
This Model Factory Hiro model of Andretti’s Lotus Ford 79 was somewhat different from other builds because I remade more parts than for previous models and spent more time on improving the existing parts of the kit.
The 1978 French Grand Prix took place at the Paul Ricard circuit in the South of France. Mario Andretti was second on the grid and wasted no time in overtaking John Watson in the Brabham on the first lap, a lead which he never relinquished during the race. This was Andretti’s fourth win of the season and he went on the win the championship title with two further wins.
Unlike those models built “from-the-box”, I decided to make a new cockpit in aluminium and added a greater number of new turned parts in both brass and aluminium, as shown in the photos. I also opened up the side pods of the bodywork so that they were more like the real car. As usual I also added a number of other small parts to improve the appearance of the model such as the various cables.
The particular model was completed in December 2015 and and was on display at Retromobile 2016.
