1:43-Scale, Hand-built Model of the Ferrari Dino 246 SP, Winner Targa Florio 1961

An André-Marie Ruf kit of the winning 246 from Le Mans 1962 was used as the template for this model, but it was completely scratch-built to make the “version haute” used in the Targa Florio.

The 246 SP chassis #0790 was one of 3 cars entered by Ferrari in the 1961 Targa Florio, and was driven to victory by Wolfgang von Trips and Olivier Gendebien. Despite setting the fastest lap over the course, the Porsche of Stirling Moss and Graham Hill led for most of the race, only relinquishing the lead once to the Ferrari. However, in a cruel twist of fate, the Porsche suffered mechanical failure only 5 miles from the finish, giving the win to von Trips and Gendebien.

As can be clearly seen in the photos I have taken the original white metal body of the Ruf kit and used it as a template to make a new, scratch-built, “high” body using cast resin with the addition of both plasticard and brass. The bonnet lid (with opening cap) and surround for the windscreen have been scratch-built in brass. The initial construction of the chassis frame using brass tube can be seen in photo 17.

August 2013 - new photos have been added showing the progress of the body, chassis frame, rear suspension and engine. In particular they show the first fittings of the engine block with the suspension, the interior and the seats. I have made some scratch-built hinges to enable the rear bodywork to be opened and closed so I was also testing the mechanism and its effectiveness once the mudguards had been added. Finally, there are some photos of the scratch-built cooling tubes and ducts for the rear disc brakes, before being fitted to the bodywork and after.

The particular model was specially commissioned by a customer and was finished in November 2013.
