This one-off model is of the Auto Union Type A, winner of the 1934 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. It was driven by Hans Stuck, and was a significant win for the Auto Union partnership, not just because it was their first Grand Prix victory, but it was on German soil and they had beaten the omnipresent Mercedes team.

The car was designed by Ferdinand Porsche and Adolf Rosenberg and was both innovative and unconventional for the time, largely because it was a mid-engined race car.

In the beginning the model was to be based on an MCM kit, but after spending some time working with the kit I decided to merely use it as a basic template for the prototype to provide me with some of the dimensions of the bodywork. Therefore the model has been completely rebuilt either from scratch by me or from specially-commissioned photo-etched parts that I have designed. As a result none of the original kit now remains as I felt this was the best way to ensure that the model would have the highest level of detail and quality.

The first set of photos (1 to 13) were added in June 2011. They include the chassis, which is a combination of white metal for the underside and a frame in brass. All parts of the bodywork are scratch-built in brass apart from the tail which is made from Evergreen plasticard. Plasticard has also been used to make the water tank, the oil tank and the radiator.

Originally I planned to use the engine from the original kit with a number of modifications such as a new cylinder-head in brass (photo 8), but I have now completely rebuilt the engine from scratch. The most recent photos (14 to 26), which were taken during October & November 2011, show the new engine, which is now finished. As well as the cylinder-head, it’s possible to see the various turned aluminium parts, the carburettor and air filters.

The photos also show the fully opening & closing engine cover in brass and the finished chassis in brass. There are also the various parts of the front & rear suspension scratch-built from turned brass and aluminium. The final photo shows the front suspension now fitted to the chassis together with the pedals and braking system.

The model was presented for the first time at Retromobile 2012 in Paris. The final set of five photos show the finished model.
