One-off, 1:43-Scale, Super-detailed, Fully-opening, Hand-built Model of the Alfa Romeo P2, Winner Targa Florio 1930

This one-off model of the P2 is the winner of the 1930 Targa Florio, #30, driven by Achille Varzi. I find the car interesting not just because it was the winner of the race in an epic battle with Louis Chiron in a Bugatti (the victory went to Varzi by only 1. 48 minutes after almost seven hours of racing), but also because of the very unusual position of the spare wheel.

I also particularly liked the story that, during the last, frenzied lap, desperately trying to keep ahead of second-placed Chiron, Varzi got his mechanic to refuel the car from a can whilst still racing. Inevitably fuel was spilt and some splashed onto the hot exhaust, setting the rear of the car alight, so that flames were licking dangerously around the car. His mechanic had to use his seat cushion to put out the flames, but despite this close call, Varzi won the race.

The prototype was not based on a kit, but was completely scratch-built my me. The first eight pictures show the prototype which I made from plasticard, resin and brass. The only parts not made by me are the wheels and I’ve only used them to give an idea of what the finished model is going to look like.

The various parts of the prototype were used to cast the body and other parts of the model, and to make the specially-commissioned photo-etched parts.  The final four photos show the completed model, which was was presented for the first time at Retromobile 2013 in Paris.
