One-off, 1:12-Scale, Super-detailed, Hand-built Model of the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 'Monza', 1932 Monaco Grand Prix

This 1:12-scale model has been built from the 2020 Italeri plastic kit of Tazio Nuvolari's winning car from the 1932 Monaco Grand Prix.

The Italeri kit is very comprehensive and has a lot of parts, but as they are plastic I have decided to make many new, scratch-built parts in aluminium and brass to either replace parts so as to improve the quality of the model, or to add new parts not supplied with the kit to add plenty of new detail. Many of these parts can be seen in the photos, some of which show comparisons with the original parts from the kit.

Scratch-built parts include a new conduit for the spark plug wires; a new air filter for the new carburettor; new dashboard instruments in turned aluminium; various turned parts for the engine and ignition system, plus new wiring; real bolts to fix the engine to the chassis plus real nuts and bolts to hold together the various parts of the chassis; the addition of real nuts to the firewall; new spark plugs with real nuts; real bolts on the cylinder head; new mechanical linkages; and a new starting handle (hand crank).

As well as these new parts, I've worked on the paint finish of the plastic parts to improve their appearance and to give a more realistic finish. For example I've painted the seat with artist oil paints to resemble real leather rather than use the material supplied with the kit. I've also concentrated on those parts which would be metal (aluminium, steel, magnesium and brass) on the real car and used various paint techniques to make them look as realistic i.e. like metal, as possible.

The photos of the work-in-progress were taken during the first half of 2020, much of which was spent in lockdown here in France because of COVID 19.  The photos of the virtually finished car on its temporary base were taken in July 2020.

The photos of the finished car were taken in January 2021. The last photo is of one of the beautiful wire wheels from the transkit by the Portuguese model company Fernando Pinto Models which significantly added to the overall look of the finished model.

As with my other 1:12-scale models, only one model of this particular version of the Monza will be available, so that the client will have a unique, one-off piece, complete with a personalised book of photos covering the building of the model.

I have previously made a 1:43-scale, scratch-built model of the 8C Monza, version Targa Florio, which can be viewed by clicking here

The model was finished in 2021 and was on display at Retromobile 2022. The price of the model is 4,900.00 Euros (incl. French sales tax), and it is currently available to purchase from my online store Kit Miniatures.  Please click here to be taken to the store, or please Contact Me directly.
